Title: Boat Skipper (Restricted Coxswains, Coxswains and Master 5)
Department(s): Quondong Pearl Farm and other locations as required
Reports to: Deck Supervisor and Assistant Farm Manager

 

Job Summary

The primary function of this role is to skipper a cleaning boat and be responsible for the welfare and safety of all your crew, and the correct and safe operation of the vessel you are in charge of. You will also carry out routine cleaning and maintenance on all shell husbandry and make key observations that can assist management with immediate and future decisions.


Summary of Essential Job Functions

SAFETY

  • As the skipper of a vessel, the safety and welfare of your crew is paramount. Should weather conditions deteriorate throughout the day, you will be required to notify your superior and convey the situation.
  • To place in high regard, recognised boat handling with safety practices.
  • Run 'Man over board' drills on a monthly basis or when you have green crew on board.
  • Train all crew on basic operation of the vessel and radio in case of an accident involving the skipper.
  • Complete incident / accident / near miss reporting as per company policy

MAINTENANCE

  • Always follow start up/shut down procedures.
  • Spend time each day on vessel maintenance as outlined in SOP including greasing moving components.
  • Keep tools in a clean and orderly working condition in your personal tool box.
  • Wash down decks and equipment at the end of each working day on cleaning boat and dinghy.
  • Develop a familiar understanding of the fuel, water, hydraulic, electrical and pumping systems.
  • Report maintenance issues and faults to the Farm Manager/ Assistant Farm manager.
  • Vessel log book to be completed daily.

LINE MAINTENANCE, SHELL HANDLING & SHELL CLEANING

  • Always handle shell with care.
  • Reduce the time shell is out of water. If the shell is out of the water for relocation or extended periods of time, cover with tarps to protect from the elements.
  • Check every panel handled for repairs.
  • Keep neat and accurate paper work/day sheets.
  • Assist with all other aspects of the operation, including harvest, spat deployments and line installation and maintenance.
  • Become proficient in line repairs (splicing), line removal and line replacement.

TRAINING & COMMUNICATION

  • Provide inductions and training to all new crew under your supervision so to provide a safe and productive working environment.
  • Provide ongoing training of Trainee Skippers.
  • Provide regular feedback to your line Manager regarding the performance of staff (including both acceptable and desired performance as well as breaches of conduct). .
  • Liaise with management regarding farming techniques you believe are effective or could be improved.
  • At the completion of each day have all of your crew washing down cleaning boats and preparing for the following days work. (Removal of rubbish, re-loading with new stock etc)
  • Ensure that the tasks you ask your crew to perform throughout the day, are also performed by you.  It is your responsibility and requirement to set an example.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism at all times, set a good example to all crew at all times, taking into consideration the companies policies and procedures whether in capacity as Boat Skipper or aboard the Mothership.


Minimum Requirements

  1. Restricted Coxswains Aquaculture
  2. 6 months experience skippering vessels
  3. Experience with vessel maintenance
  4. Senior First Aid Certificate
  5. Marine Radio Operators Licence

Desirable

  1. Coxswains or Master 5
  2. Pearl farming experience

Abilities Required

  1. Must be physically fit
  2. Ability to work as part of a team and be a team leader
  3. Good organisational skill
  4. Excellent communication skills
  5. Ability to obtain MSIC card (Federal Police clearance required)
  6. Self motivated and a mature attitude
